The International Watchkeeper Flotilla Skipper and International Bareboat Skipper courses require the same depth of knowledge and training. The difference between the certificates is the candidate’s sea-time experience.

To be awarded the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate, a candidate must have logged a minimum of 200 nautical miles and 10 days at sea by the end of the course. The school must save evidence of the student's seatime on file as it may be requested during an IYT audit.

If a candidate successfully completes the required training and assessments but does not yet meet the minimum sea-time requirement, they should instead be issued the International Watchkeeper Flotilla Skipper Certificate.

Once the candidate has gained sufficient additional experience to meet the minimum requirement of 10 days and 200 nautical miles, they may submit evidence of their sea time to the school for review.

If the school confirms that the required sea time has been met, the school may then order the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate for the student. The student does not need to repeat the course solely because they initially lacked the required sea time.

To issue the International Watchkeeper Flotilla Skipper or International Bareboat Skipper certificate students must complete the theory (can be done online via eLearning), and the Flotilla/Bareboat Skipper course practical training and assessment at the school. There is a practical assessment form in the IYT Document Library as seen below:

The VHF is then a prerequisite for the course. To issue the IYT VHF the students must complete the VHF theory (can be done online via eLearning), and then the VHF practical training and assessment must be completed at the school. There is a practical assessment form in the IYT Document Library as seen below:

The ICC can then be issued based on the Flotilla Skipper/Bareboat Skipper training (providing the student meets the requirements of Resolution 40). It may be helpful to think of the ICC as an additional certification, whilst the International Flotilla Skipper or International Bareboat Skipper is the underlying skipper qualification on which the ICC is based. For example, the Watchkeeper Flotilla Skipper and International Bareboat Skipper certificates both qualify for the same ICC endorsement: MCA ICC 24m Sail, 10m Power Coastal Waters.
